The price for checking a first bag on domestic, Caribbean, and Latin America flights will now start at $39 during off-peak periods, up from $35. During peak travel times, such as summer holidays and major vacation periods, fees jump to $49 from the previous $40.

Travelers paying less than 24 hours before departure, including at the airport, will face an additional $10 surcharge, reflecting the industry trend of incentivizing prepayment for checked baggage. Certain exemptions remain for co-branded credit card holders and elite frequent flyers.

Jet fuel, the second-largest expense for airlines after labor, has seen dramatic increases in recent weeks. Prices in major U.S. cities like Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York averaged $4.57 per gallon last Friday—an 83% increase since the Iran conflict escalated at the end of February.

Airlines often adjust fees for optional services, such as checked luggage, to offset rising operational costs while keeping base fares competitive. JetBlue emphasized that the fee adjustments allow the airline to continue providing customer perks, including complimentary snacks and drinks, unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi, and seatback entertainment.

Fee increases by one carrier frequently prompt competitors to follow suit. While JetBlue has implemented these changes first, other major U.S. carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta, Southwest, and Frontier may also adjust pricing in response to surging fuel expenses.
